Car clubs have been around since the automobile was first made available to the public, but it wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s that they become especially popular. These clubs originally functioned as places where car enthusiasts could build and show off their own custom creations. With the rise of NASCAR, street racing also started to gain popularity, and many car builders began to see a renewed need to join forces to create the speediest, most attractive cars on the road. Many traditional clubs were sponsored by local car dealers and were run like a business.

It was the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA), founded in 1954, that popularized the idea of a classic car, which at the time was considered to be any car built before World War II. Today, car clubs still remain a popular pastime among car enthusiasts across the country. Many modern clubs have an active online presence and charge membership fees in exchange for certain benefits, like special access to car shows and events.

Southeast Texas Vintage Cruisers

If you’re looking for a place to show off your vintage or classic car, the Southeast Texas Vintage Cruisers (SETXVC) is a great place to meet like-minded enthusiasts, even if you don’t have a car worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. SETXVC prides itself on being an open-minded, family-oriented club that gives back to its community through local charity events and fundraisers. They hold gatherings twice a month where you have the option to show off your ride and enjoy great barbecue, meet new people, and listen to old rock and roll music.

The club is completely free to join, and their club T-shirts are a great way to show that you’re part of their community. If you feel like showing off your car and checking out what other cool cars are on display, you can take part in their Rod Runs, which offer a way to show off your classic models, concept cars, or other unique vehicles for others to see and admire. Their annual car shows are also a blast and feature all different kinds of makes and models, with all proceeds going toward a charitable cause.

Sports Car Club of America South Texas Border Region

The South Texas Border Region of the Sports Car Club of America is an excellent club for meeting car enthusiasts as well as participating in road racing, rallying, and autocross events. Since they’re located in Corpus Christi, this may be an option for enthusiasts who enjoy a long ride in their favorite car in order to attend exciting events.

The club’s two-day autocross events are especially popular, featuring drivers maneuvering through a small road course lined with cones as they’re timed, with a penalty incurred for each cone that’s knocked down. If you’re interested in watching an autocross event, you can attend entirely for free. You can also participate for a set fee, and the club accepts just about any type of car.

Drivers attend one autocross meeting during the weekend on either Saturday or Sunday, where they can learn about recent issues that have arisen and hear special announcements. If you want to join the Sports Car Club of America’s South Texas Border Region, you can visit their website to register online or mail in a membership form. General meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Rudy’s BBQ on South Padre Island Drive (SPID) in Corpus Christi.
